One of the most common questions I get from my clients is how to tell whether their gremlin (a.k.a. inner critic) or their intuition is talking. Say you’re having doubts about someone you’ve just started dating. How do you know if your gut is trying to warn you off, or if you’re just scared?
When your gremlin, or inner critic, is running the show, here are some typical thoughts you’ll have:
- What if it doesn’t work out?
- I could never do that.
- I have to take this chance because I won’t get another one.
- Saying no would feel awkward.
You may feel a tightening in your chest, pressure on your solar plexus, or anxiety.
When you’re in touch with your intuition, you may feel a sense of clarity, wisdom, or joy. I often notice that I’m standing up straighter or feeling more confident, even if I’m getting a message to stay away from someone. You may notice that you’re trying to understand the situation instead of judging it.
Take a Deep Breath
Taking a deep breath can bridge the gap from the fear of the gremlin to the excitement of the intuition. You may have noticed from the descriptions above that the gremlin shows up more in your head, while intuition is more in your body. That breath will move you towards awareness of your body and towards connecting with your intuition.
Everyone experiences intuition differently. I have a sudden sense of knowing, and my whole body feels more open and connected. The more you get in touch with your intuition, the easier it will be to distinguish between it and your inner critic.
